Trail Thursday-Flume Gorge, NH

May 03, 2018 by Stacy McAllister in Hiking, Trail Thursday

Happy Thursday! Trail Thursday is back and I wanted to share with you a few photos from our visit to the Flume Gorge in New Hampshire a few years ago. My mom and I visited here in May and it was very quiet, but so beautiful. There was still remnants of snow in some spots and we decided to do the full two mile loop around the gorge. The boardwalk to get to the top of the flume is so beautiful and well constructed.

I just love all of the moss that you see when hiking in the White Mountains- it always reminds me of a rainforest! The overall walk isn't too taxing and I remember there being several benches along the route that you could stop and 'smell the roses' (or enjoy the new Spring blooms popping up).

The history of the flume is also so incredible to me. Can you even imagine lava existing in New England?!

Have you ever been to the Flume Gorge? Any tips for visiting it? I'd recommend going during the off-season (Spring/ late Fall) and during the week- I can imagine it is very busy in the summer!

What's your schedule for today?? --> It's another rest day from running for me, but I'll be hitting up both the stairclimber and treadmill (at an incline) to work on building up these quads!

Have a great day!

TravelThursday IS BACK!..with a REMIX...

February 08, 2018 by Stacy McAllister in backpacking, Hiking, Trail Thursday

I'm switching it up this month and doing Trail Thursday because really love looking back on my past adventures (and trying to conjure up new ideas)! So today, we're journeying out to the Flat Tops Wilderness (about 30 minutes south of Steamboat Springs) to Black Mandall Lakes!

We did this hike as a backpacking trip over Labor Day and maybe only saw 2 or 3 other groups of hikers the entire time. I think it around a 4 or 5 miles roundtrip hike (possibly more- it's been a few years) and really pretty gentle hike overall. The lake at the end is so stunning. When we went, the trails were pretty muddy and difficult to follow (at times), so definitely remember to bring a map! We also hiked to Mandall Pass on the way out the next day and that brought us amazing views (but also not well marked, so a map is a MUST).

Anywhere we've ever gone in the Flat Tops has been amazing and I can't wait to explore more of the ample trails they have there this coming summer. I want to do more hiking and backpacking trips and possibly cut-back on running a touch (I most certainly cannot do it all). Already so excited for camping season to begin!
